The Olympics and Extraterrestrials

Rio gets the Olympic Games in 2016. Chicago is bummed out. It’s a failure for President Obama. What does any of this have to do with First Contact with an extraterrestrial civilization? It’s just another sign that Earth is changing.

It’s tough for Americans. We tend to view the rise of other countries as our downfall. China and India prosper and we can only see the threats to our economy. Certainly the strength of other nations provides a challenge to the United States. But downfall? Could it merely be a matter of wealth and progress spreading out across the globe?

Brazil won the bid for the 2016 Olympic Games because they had the better proposal. They also had a really important fact on their side: The Olympic Games have never been held in South America. It’s time. And it’s time for Americans to recognize that the strengthening of other nations doesn’t have to be our downfall. We don’t have to be a lone superpower. We could be one strong nation joining hands with many other strong nations.

The future is not reserved for superpowers and blocs of power. We need to rise together in a true democracy of nations, where every country can participate fully and equally. That may be a long time in coming. It would certainly be something an extraterrestrial civilization would closely consider when determining when to make First Contact.

It’s time for us to realize: we are one world and one people.
